How to Start Creating Digital Content

How to Start Creating Digital Content Today

In my last post, I talked about why anyone might want to be a digital content creator — including freedom, income, and the joy of sharing what you know.

But now you might be asking: How do I actually get started?

I asked the same question myself when I began this journey. I’m 69, not some tech whiz, but I’ve learned a few simple steps that can help anyone begin creating content online.

Understand What a Digital Content Creator Is

Before you dive in, it helps to know what this really means.

A digital content creator is simply someone who:

  • Shares knowledge, ideas, or experiences online
  • Uses digital formats like blog posts, videos, checklists, PDFs, courses, or social media posts
  • Creates content that helps, entertains, or informs others

That’s it. You don’t have to be a social media influencer or have thousands of followers. You just need something useful to share — and the willingness to do it.

Pick a Topic You Care About

The best content creators build around topics they enjoy or know well.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I know a lot about?
  • What hobbies or skills could I teach?
  • What life experience could I share that others might find valuable?
  • What problems have I solved that others might face?

For example, I’m focusing on digital marketing, side hustles, and content creation — because those are things I’m learning and doing now.

Your topic can be anything — health tips, DIY projects, travel, financial advice, fitness, recipes — the list is endless.

Choose Your Main Platform

Next, pick a primary way to share your content. Don’t try to do everything at once — start simple.

Here are a few great options:

  • Blog → like this one (jobfreeprosperity.com)
  • YouTube channel → short or long videos
  • Facebook page or group → posts, short videos, links
  • Email newsletter → great for building an audience over time

Since I enjoy writing, I started with a blog first. I may add more video later.

Pick what feels easiest for you — the key is to start creating.

Start Creating Simple Content

Don’t overthink this. You don’t need fancy tools or a complicated setup.

Here are some very simple content ideas to start with:

  • Blog post: Share a tip, a story, a list of helpful resources.
  • Checklist: Create a simple PDF checklist your audience can download.
  • Short video: Record a 1–3 minute video with a tip or lesson.
  • Quick guide: Write a short “how to” guide based on your experience.

The goal is progress, not perfection. The more you create, the more you’ll learn and improve.

Build Consistency

The hardest part for many new digital creators is consistency.

Here’s what I’ve found works best:

  • Pick a schedule you can stick to — even once a week is great.
  • Create a simple content plan — write down 5–10 topics you want to cover.
  • Block time on your calendar — treat it like an appointment.

The more you publish, the more your confidence will grow — and the more your audience will too.

Connect and Learn

Finally, remember that content creation is a journey. You’ll learn as you go, and it helps to connect with others doing the same.

Some ways to do this:

  • Join Facebook groups about blogging or content creation.
  • Follow other creators in your niche.
  • Read blogs and watch videos about improving your skills.
  • Ask for feedback and be open to learning.

I’ve found that even at 69, there’s always something new to learn — and this community is one of the most welcoming I’ve seen online.

Final Thoughts

How to start creating digital content isn’t about age or tech skills. It’s about sharing what you know and helping others — and having fun doing it.

Start simple. Pick a topic. Choose a platform. Create your first piece of content.
