Why Would Anyone Want to Be a Digital Content Creator?
I never thought I’d call myself a “digital content creator.” But here I am — at 69 — diving into this world and loving the process.
Maybe you’ve seen people online using that term and wondered what it really means. Or maybe you’re thinking about starting something of your own but wondering if it’s worth the time.
So why would anyone want to be a digital content creator? Let me share some real reasons, ones that might just inspire you to take the leap yourself.
You Get to Share What You Know
Every one of us has a lifetime of knowledge, skills, and experience. Whether it’s lessons learned through business, hobbies, health, personal growth, or even life’s challenges, what you know can help someone else.
When you become a digital content creator, you’re simply using the internet to share that knowledge. That can take many forms:
- Blog posts
- Short videos
- Downloadable PDFs and checklists
- Simple courses
- Newsletters
- Social media posts
It doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is starting with what you know because someone out there is looking for that very information.
You Can Help People in a Meaningful Way
This is one of the most rewarding parts of creating digital content.
When you publish something online, you’re giving someone a tool, a tip, or a bit of encouragement they may really need. Over time, you start to hear from people who were helped by what you shared.
That’s powerful. And it feels good to know you’re making a difference, even in a small way.
At my age, I’ve learned a few things — and now I get to share those things with others who might be walking the same path. You can too.
You Have the Opportunity to Earn Income
Let’s be honest, while helping people is great, it’s also nice when your efforts lead to some extra income. And that’s one of the biggest reasons people become digital content creators.
There are many ways to earn:
- Selling ebooks or checklists
- Offering online courses
- Promoting affiliate products you believe in
- Selling digital tools or templates
- Monetizing through ads or sponsorships
No, it’s not “get rich quick” but it is very realistic to build a steady stream of income from content you’ve created once. I know people doing this at every age, and many started later in life just like me.
You Can Work From Anywhere
For someone like me, semi-retired, living in Oregon, this is one of the biggest perks. I don’t want to be tied to an office or a rigid schedule.
As a digital content creator, I can work from home, a coffee shop, or even while traveling. All I need is my laptop and an internet connection.
That kind of freedom is worth a lot. And it’s one of the main reasons this path is so appealing to many people who want more flexibility in their lives.
You Build a Digital Legacy
This one surprised me the most when I first started creating content.
When you publish something online — whether it’s a blog post, a video, or a downloadable guide — it stays there. People can find it today, next week, next year, or even five years from now.
That means your work continues helping people long after you create it. You’re building a digital legacy that can live on and continue making an impact.
For me, that’s a great motivator. It’s nice to know that something I post today could help someone months or years down the road.
It’s Never Too Late to Start
One of the biggest myths about becoming a digital creator is that it’s a young person’s game. Nothing could be further from the truth.
In fact, being older can be an advantage — because you bring perspective, wisdom, and life experience that younger creators simply don’t have yet.
People trust those who’ve been there and done that. Your voice matters, and there are people out there who want to hear from someone like you.
I’m living proof. I’m learning this digital world one step at a time, and I’m seeing first-hand that it’s never too late to create, share, and even build a new income stream doing it.
Final Thoughts
So why would anyone want to be a digital content creator?
Because it gives you freedom.
It lets you help people.
It allows you to earn extra income.
And it gives you the joy of sharing what you know with the world.
If you’ve ever thought about starting, my advice is simple: just begin.
You don’t need to know it all. You don’t need fancy equipment.
You just need a willingness to share and a heart to serve.
And if a 69-year-old guy like me can jump in and get started — so can you.
See you on the journey,
Steve Legg
